Reimagining Career Pivots
When I left nursing after co-founding a business, I felt a little like I was starting over. I had spent over a decade in healthcare, building my skills, learning constantly, and leading teams—but stepping into the world of entrepreneurship, I wasn’t sure how all of that experience would translate outside the hospital walls.
It’s a feeling many of us have when we consider a career pivot: “Do I really have what it takes?” The truth is, more often than not, you already do.
All the skills I had developed as a nurse (following protocols, building standard operating procedures, managing workflows, making quick decisions under pressure) were exactly the tools I needed to build and grow a business. I just hadn’t realized it yet.
Healthcare is constantly evolving. New research, technologies, and procedures emerge every day, and staying ahead requires adaptability, critical thinking, and a commitment to systems. When I started my business, I quickly realized that running a company isn’t all that different: there are processes to create, standards to uphold, and a team to guide.

In healthcare, following protocols can literally save lives. In business, following or creating processes can save time, money, and headaches. I used my experience building standard operating procedures and protocols to scale operations efficiently. From onboarding new team members to establishing customer service standards, having clear procedures in place made it possible for the business to run smoothly, even when things got busy.
As a nurse, I learned how to prioritize tasks and create smooth workflows in high-pressure environments. Those same skills translated directly to my business operations. I streamlined order fulfillment, product production, and built systems for client communication, making it easier for my team to operate with efficiency.
Healthcare is unpredictable. One day, everything goes according to plan, and the next, you’re responding to an emergency. Learning to pivot quickly while maintaining quality became second nature. In business, adaptability is just as important, whether it’s responding to market changes, pivoting your strategy, or learning new tools and technologies. The ability to continuously learn and evolve is a skill that pays dividends in any career.
Leading in the research and clinical settings taught me how to make decisions with incomplete information, delegate effectively, and inspire confidence in my team. Those same leadership skills carried over directly to managing a growing business. I learned to articulate a clear vision, guide and support my team, and remain composed under pressure, abilities that are valuable in any career.
Take some time to write down everything you do in your current role—tasks, responsibilities, and strengths. Then, think about how each of those could apply to a new industry. Often, the skills you take for granted are exactly what a new employer or venture needs.
You may not realize how much leadership, delegation, prioritization, and problem-solving you already do. Even if your next career seems completely different, these skills are universally valuable. Practice framing them in ways that show your impact and results.
If you thrived in environments with structure or processes, highlight that. Businesses always need systems to operate efficiently, and your ability to build, implement, and refine processes will make you stand out.
If you’ve succeeded in fast-paced, unpredictable environments, that’s a huge advantage in any career. Show examples of times you’ve pivoted, handled change, or solved unexpected problems. These stories speak louder than job titles.
Skills like communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving are often the most transferable of all. Don’t overlook them, they’re essential in nearly every career path.
Your background is an asset. You already have skills, knowledge, and experience that can be applied in ways you might not have considered. Whether you’re transitioning into a new industry, starting your own business, or exploring a side hustle, don’t sell yourself short.
The next career, business, or opportunity you’re dreaming about might be waiting for exactly the skills you already have—sometimes you just need to reframe them and take that first step.
Remember: you’re more qualified than you think.
